The team behind the rover targeted an area rich in clay full of sulfates to find evidence of water on the planet, providing information about the Martian climate that scientists are still trying to understand.

The minerals were formed when lakes and streams were once a reality at Gale Crater, now located at the base of Mount Sharp, a three-mile mountain from which Curiosity has been traveling since 2014.

Higher up the mountain is the “transition zone”, which Curiosity photographs revealed dry streams and dunes formed above the lake sediments.

“We no longer see the lake deposits we saw for years lower on Mount Sharp,” said Ashwin Vasavada, a Curiosity scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

“On the contrary, we see a lot of evidence for drier climates, such as dry dunes that occasionally had streams around them. “This is a big change from the lakes that remained millions of years ago.”

The rover finds less clay and more sulfate as it climbs higher through the transition zone and soon Curiosity will find the last rock sample it will take in this zone.

This will hopefully provide a more detailed look at the changing mineral composition of the planet’s rocks.

Curiosity takes panorama-style photos, highlighting the landscape of the still mysterious planet.

The information gathered from these photographs details the complex knowledge of water on the planet. It is possible that the groundwater stood still and flowed at some point, according to the NASA website.

Curiosity will celebrate 10 years on Mars in August, but nothing is stopping it from continuing its mission.

Earlier this month, the rover had to go into safe mode after detecting higher than normal temperatures on the planet.

This shuts down all functions except the most important ones so that engineers can still assess the situation.

Curiosity returned to normal a few days later, but engineers still wanted to analyze the exact cause of the problem, suspecting it was caused by a temperature abnormality detected by the rover.

Previous problems with the rover’s wheels had also prompted the Curiosity team to take new photos of its wheels every 3,281 feet, or 1,000 meters.

“If we ever got to the point where a single wheel had broken most of its grudges, we could take a controlled break to throw away the remaining pieces,” said Megan Lynn, Curiosity project manager.

“Given the recent trends, it seems unlikely that we will need to take such action. The wheels hold up well, providing the traction we need to keep climbing. ”
